CARE Award: Research Stan Walker's song, The Climb

I can almost see it

That dream I am dreaming

But there's a voice inside my head saying

"You'll never reach it"
Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking
But I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high
There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb
The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going
And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on
'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!
There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Somebody's gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!
Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It's all about, it's all about the climb
Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa
I can almost see it
That dream I am dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying
"You'll never reach it"
Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking
But I gotta keep trying

This song, is sang by Stan Walker. The song is called "The Climb". The message in this song is that everyone will go through difficulties but, if you keep persevering, you will get passed them.

Cybersmart

Today we had to write a list of things to keep you cyber smart. Follow these rules if you want to stay safe online. I think tip number five is a major one. People actually believe it, but it's not real.

Why is it so Important to Keep Oral Storytelling Alive?

Oral storytelling is a great way to keep the Maori stories, alive. This is a very important tradition to pass down, from generation to generation.

In LS2 we have been looking at Myths and Legends. With a buddy you needed to watch three videos with subtitles. I then had a learning conversation with my partner (Eric). We have worked collaboratively for the last part of this activity, which was to write a very powerful 25 word summary, on why it is important to keep oral storytelling alive. The text above is our summary.

Exploring Maori Myths and Lengends

In LS2 we have been exploring Maori myths and legends. Eric and I have used Storyboard That to practise using dialogue to show rather than tell. Our Storyboard That is based on 'How Maui slowed the Sun' doesn't have enough time to do his daily things. One thing that challenged me was finding the right things for the myth.

Maths Game - Ordering Fractions

I have played a maths game. In this game you have to place fractions in order. After you have finished all three levels you get your results. I managed to get them all correct except for the last one. If you would like to play this game here is the link.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to blog about my week. I had to include what I learnt, what I liked and what I didn't like in my summary. I learnt that one third of New Zealand's population live in Auckland. I like how we visited a lot of places in New Zealand like Karekare Beach and Rangitoto. I didn't dislike anything, as this was a great trip. One thing I find interesting is that people in New Zealand are planning to get rid of all Possums by 2050, which I think is a huge goal.

Winter Learning Journey

For this winter Learning Journey activity I had to take a photo of myself doing something that I find relaxing. I have taken a photo of me watching YouTube.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to think of three things that could reduce the amount of rubbish in my own neighbourhood. Here is my list:

1. Put a sign up that says no littering.
2. Put more bins around, so where ever you are there's most likely going to be a bin next to you.
3. Don't eat packaged food outside.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to watch three clips of The All Blacks performing the Haka. I then needed to list them in order from best (1) to worst (3). Here is my list:
1. 1 - Link
2. 3 - Link
3. 2 - Link

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to write down three events that take place in the Matariki festival at the Te papa Museum. Here is the Matariki list:

1. Traditional dances on stage
2. Different plays that are entertaining to watch
3. You could watch fireworks get lit

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey I had to imagine I had never been to New Zealand before, and I was the first on the waka to arrive at Shag Point. I then had to write a poem on how I would feel when I have arrived. Here is my poem.

I was nervous as I walked towards the waka
At times wanted to jump off and swim back
We made it to land
I was stunned by the bright green grass and trees ahead of me

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had decide if I would like to cycle the Otago Rail Trail. I would say yes because from the images it looks like a lot of fun, the views look amazing. It is 150 km long. I also like riding bikes a lot.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to research a famous New Zealander. I decided to research Jonah Lomu. This DLO needed to include where he is from, Why he is famous and two interesting facts.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to imagine I got lost in a forest, I have to write 8 - 10 sentences of what might happen next

Everything is this forest was amazing, I was so glad I came here. I then walked up to this really stunning tree and, was about to ask my groups opinion on it, that's when I realised I got carried away and lost my group. This forest was so big it would be impossible for me to find them, I looked in my back pack all I had was sweater and a 1.5 litre water bottle. The Sun had heated up really quickly. After an hour of yelling and searching for my friends I had ran out of water, I started to panic. I stumbled across a very big tree with many branches on it, I decided to climb it, although I was afraid of heights I managed to make it very close to the top. I looked around and I saw my group, I could tell it was them because one of them was wearing a bright blue cap and a black and white stripe long sleeve. I yelled at them and said it was me, I asked them to stay there so I could get to them. When I reunited with my group I was so relieved.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to form my own opinion about people fishing in Farewell Spit. I think that we should ban people from fishing at Farewell Spit because a lot of Hector dolphins are getting killed by fishing nets. If this continues, it's most likely for them to go extinct. They should find another place to fish.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to watch two movie trailers. I then needed to rate it our of five and write a summary. The movie is about a girls twin brother who dies at birth. Their tribe needed a new chief and only males could be chiefs. Since the brother died the custom was changed. I give this movie a two out of five because it is something I wouldn't watch

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to go on a website and red about a place called Farewell Spit. It was on the news not long ago. Some whales swam into a spit and got stuck. They couldn't get back into the ocean because the water was very shallow. The local people tried their best to keep the whales alive, unfortunately many of them died. I had to describe what the local people tried to do to save them. This is what they did:
1. They filled bowls, chilly bins, water bottles, cooking pots with water to keep the whales wet.
2. The grabbed towel and drenched them in water and placed it on the whales.
3. They filled buckets of water to pour onto the whales.

Winter Learning Journey

For this Winter Learning Journey activity I had to read about how people in New Zealand are trying to get rid of pests such as Possums. After I had read why they want to get rid of them, I had to write why I agree.
1. They are eating a kokako's (endangered NZ bird) eggs.
2. They carry deadly diseases that can spread easily, which could kill other things.
3. They are doing a lot of damage to our native trees.

Winter Learning Journey

For this activity I had to choose a native NZ bird I would like to adopt. I then needed to find facts about it. I chose the Red Crowned Kakariki (Red Crowned parakeet). Here are some facts.

Identification: Red Crowned Kakariki's are a long tailed parrot.
Habitat: Kermadec Islands, there also have been sightings of them at Raoul and Macauley Islands.
Diet: Red Crowned Kakariki's are omnivores. They mainly seeds. They also eat flowers, invertebrates, some scale insects, which they mainly eat before breeding.
